The Importance of Domain Authority to SEO

By Audreyabbey

With Google's algorithm constantly changing and putting more weight on the trust and authority associated with a domain, domain authority has increasingly becoming a very important SEO factor to score.

According to SEO experts, aside from having significant impact on a site's ability to rank highly in search results for target keywords, domain authority is also one of the toughest ranking factors to score.

What is Domain Authority?

Domain Authority measures the number of quality pages that link to your site domain, and the ways in which they do so, predicting how well a web page will rank on a domain.

Domain authority represents the overall “strength” of your site over time and how well it ranks in search results.

According to SEOMoz, the higher the Domain Authority of a site, the greater the possibility for an individual page on that domain to rank well.

Search engine optimization firms could use domain authority to predict the performance of a website in SERPs rankings. It could also be used to compare one site to another and analyze and determine the “strength” of their site (entire domains or sub-domains) over time. It can also be used to quickly target pages and websites that have the best potential to perform well in SERPs.

Factors of Domain Authority and its Importance to SEO

Domain Authority is influenced by:

• Diversity/Quality of Links. In ranking, Google will look into the authority or trustworthiness of the site you’re linking from. Having link diversity and quality (links from authoritative sites or domains) is great for your site SEO-wise as it will create a highly natural link profile that will add to your domain trust and authority as some of the authority domain’s link juice (authority) will rub off to your domain.

• Link Quantity. Google also considers both the number of links your site has acquired, and the number of domains those links were acquired from. However, Google considers more important the number of linking domains rather than the number of links, though this is also important. So getting one hundred backlinks from 200 different domains will be more effective and trustworthy than having one thousand backlinks from 20 domains.

• Domain Age. Authority comes with age. By having links pointing to the site for a longer period, and having other authority websites linking to them, a site could gain authority.

• Social Media Mentions. Nowadays, Tweets, recommendations, shares, likes, +1s and other social media sites have a great impact on a site’s traffic and brand reputation. For this reason, having mentions from these sites have increasingly become a more valuable asset for your internet marketing.

In these days and age of increasing awareness and knowledge where everything is available and serves in an online platter, having domain authority will give you an edge over your competition SEO-wise.
